Meet Taryn & Traci

  • Taryn began this journey with a simple but powerful goal—to protect her children’s childhood. She wants them to experience balance in school and discover the joy of learning both in the classroom and on the playground. She believes every child deserves time to play tag, run across open fields, swing high into the sky, and simply be a kid. For her, recess isn’t just a break from learning—it’s an essential part of it.

Once Traci became a mom, she was inspired by the wonder she witnessed in her children when they were given the freedom to connect with the world in their own way. That experience cemented the idea of play as an integral part of a child’s development. She believes free play and recess are vital for children to learn necessary interpersonal skills and discover their place in the world. It is her hope to provide more opportunities for joy and belonging to children during their school day.

  • Taryn is passionate about helping kids experience the joy of being outdoors. An Arizona native with a deep love for the desert state she calls home. As a mom of four, she understands the importance of play, movement, and sunshine—values that inspire her advocacy for quality recess and outdoor time for children. When she’s not passionately talking about recess, you can find her hiking Arizona’s beautiful trails or enjoying a friendly game of pickleball.

Traci was born and raised in Arizona. She graduated from ASU with a degree in Nonprofit Leadership and Management, which allowed her to work with local organizations focused on helping underserved children, youth, and families. She now enjoys staying home to “play mom” to her four children. With a high schooler, a toddler, and two in between, she is always tired. She is excited to step back into the advocacy world and champion recess for the betterment of all Arizona kids. When she’s not momming, she enjoys attempting to bake sourdough bread, thrifting, or spending time outside.

  • One of Taryn’s favorite memories from elementary school was the lunchtime sports organized by her P.E. teacher. Each quarter brought a new game—kickball, wiffle ball, flag football, or basketball. She and her friends would get completely lost in play. Those games weren’t just fun; they were the highlight of her elementary years and a big part of why she believes so deeply in the power of recess today.

One of Traci’s favorite recess memories is playing tag. She remembers running all the way to the back fence in the very back field, feeling like she had all the freedom in the world!
