Dear Representative [Name] / Senator [Name],
I am writing as a concerned resident of [County Name] to bring attention to an important issue regarding the well-being of our children.
While Tennessee prioritizes quality education, we fall short when it comes to recess. Right now, elementary students only receive a mandated 15 minutes of recess, yet Tennessee labor law requires adults to have a 30-minute break for every 6 hours of work. We are holding children to a higher standard than we hold ourselves.
Research shows that 60 minutes of daily physical activity is essential for optimal childhood development. Recess has proven time and time again to enhance not only the physical and mental health of students, but also to lower anxiety, increase attention span, and improve retention, including test scores.
HB0085/SB0158 is proposing 40 minutes of daily recess (after an amendment from 60). Increasing recess is a vital change, and educators and parents across the state agree it is necessary for the health and success of our children.
I urge you to support this bill and vote YES on HB0085/SB0158!
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
